What is an Artist Statement?
“An artist statement is a not-too-long series of sentences that describe what you make and why you make it. It’s a stand-in for you, the artist, talking to someone about your work in a way that adds to their experience of viewing that work.” (Hotchkiss, 2018)
Refining my Artist Statement
I specialise in sound production. I am experienced in working with sound for film and television as a sound recordist and post-production sound designer, as well as producing music as a rapper.
My Future Aspirations
Location Sound Recording
I’d love to work creatively in the production stage of film and television as a sound recordist, otherwise known as a location sound recorder and production sound mixer. They are responsible for capturing all on-set sound, dialogue, production sound effects and foley as well as controlling the sonic environment.
My first experience in this field was collaboration work with UAL (BA/Hons) film & television third-year students. I found myself thriving in such a creative environment, bouncing ideas off like-minded people and absorbing the art of filmmaking happening around me. It was an incredible experience; I couldn’t even sleep the night before from excitement.
My previous experience in recording sound, skilled in field recording, gave me the necessary foundation expertise I needed to perform the role of a sound recordist/location sound recorder on set.
Post-Production Sound Design
I’d love to work post-production stage, sound designing for film & television. I totally immerse myself in the creative process of filmmaking and share the investment with the director and other crew members in making the best possible outcome. Working in the film and television industry is more than a job; it is a dream of mine.
I have majorly developed my skill set in Pro Tools, gaining experience in dialogue editing, sound effects/design, composition and mixing. Already being experienced and skilled in Logic gave me the confidence that I could transfer DAW. Pro Tools is an industry-standard audio editing software; therefore, developing my technical ability was essential to continue my journey in the post-production sound design stage of filmmaking.
I found the process of post-production sound design allows me to analyse my recordings from production, therefore allowing me to learn and grow from previous mistakes. Both practices, production and post-production, cater to the development of each other.
Music Production
Music production is a core part of my practice. I am a self-producing artist and rapper; songwriting is an enjoyable creative outlet for me. The reality of making a living from being a music producer and rapper is extremely difficult as streaming platforms do not financially support artists therefore, music production takes on the role of a hobby rather than a profession. However, I am currently pursuing an academic pathway, a 20-week music production diploma at the IMW campus, which is developing my theory, ability and skillset.
