MA Location Sound Recording
Course Infomation
Location: Beaconfield | Duration: 15 Months
Discovery?
Tutor Mike Wyeld (M.A. PgCert FHEA Sound Design, Film and Television London College of Communication) suggested I have a look at the ‘MA Post-production Sound Design’ course at NFTS. However, I believe ‘MA Location Sound Recording’ would be a more suitable choice.
Why This Course?
I am interested in this production course compared to a post-production course, as recording sound is a core part of my practice, I would like to continue to develop, and I enjoy the production part of the process the most because of the social aspect of being on-set working collaboratively as a collective, its a great way to network with other like-minded creatives. I want this course to build the necessary experience and expertise to become a location sound mixer professionally, which is required in this industry. This course will continue to grow my network of filmmakers and creatives. Sound Arts shaped my sound-focused learning and recording sound practice, and as the London College of Communication is a screen school, I was able to collaborate with Film and Television students, allowing me to experience and realise that audio-related roles in filmmaking would be my career and dream profession.
Reality of Making a Living?
Employability is often freelance basis and progression from entry roles like sound assistants to senior positions; however, a conversation with an ESPN industry professional said, ‘Look for work in the Reality Industry as there is a guarantee of work, as you’re contracted for long periods of time’.
An employed sound recordist typically works long and irregular hours, often exceeding 40-hour work week. Starting salaries in established studios or television/radio range from £17,000 to £19,000. With experience, salaries can increase to £35,000 per year. Freelance daily rates reported for 10-hour day £180-£480.
Entry Requirements
- Proven interest in sound, particularly in recorded sound, a lively interest in film, television and music and a willingness to work as part of a team.
My 3 year degree in sound arts and 2 years sound design diploma proves my interest in sound and my portfolio proves my interest and pratice of recording sound.
- While we don’t select applicants based on their ability to drive, we strongly recommend that you learn to drive, as a clean, current driving license will be essential in your future career.
I am a UK full licence holder therefore, this hugely benefit to this line of work as production shoots are not locked to one location.
