Project 1: Shungite
Project 1 Summary: In this first stage of this project I plan to capture field recordings of London and merge these in composition with ultrasonic frequency recordings. This project will create awareness of electromagnetic ultrasonic frequencies that surround us in our sonic reality. These are frequencies that exceed 20kHz the maximum range of human hearing.
What is Shungite and how does this have importance to this project? Shungite is a rock that has fascinated me and others with its scientifically proven capabilities of healing properties against radiation such as EMFs (ultrasonic frequencies).
Unfortunately, there is misinformation surrounding shungite and Wikipedia is contributing by claiming that “Shungite is most widely known for pseudoscience and quack medical claims about its uses in medicine and technology, where it is claimed to have properties ranging from nebulous health benefits to blocking 5G radiation.” (Wikipedia, 2024). Direct research disproves platforms like Wikipedia contributing to the misinformation of Shungite. A former student in radiology and nuclear medicine at UCLA Medical School and with a degree in pharmacology from UC Santa Barbara Gary Fong in this video goes in depth about this exec issue.
Gary Fong using Consensus (Consensus 2024), is an AI research assistant with results of science-based research with accurate citations and peer-reviewed articles. It uses the fact checker Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, this research helped me become ‘well read’ around the topic of Shungite from Gary Thong sharing his extensive knowledge and research therefore this research was relevant in terms of informing how the field recordings may be edited for a final compositional peace. This research has inspired the idea to use an ultrasonic microphone to see if Shungite interferes with the sonic world captured by these microphones.
Discovering Shungite
I first discovered Shungite on the 2nd December 2022 with a friend from UAL accommodation halls in my first year, we were out exploring Brixton. I have always been interested in crystals therefore when someone was selling crystals they also told us about this mysterious rock Shungite.
Discovering Real Shungite
Reflecting back on my previous years I remembered my interest in Shungite therefore I began some research imitating conceptualising the idea for Project 1. From my initial research, I believed my previous pendant could be fake shungite therefore I bought a new pendant from the website https://verifiedshungite.com.
