Portfolio: Initial Design & Production

Developing Idea Project 1: Audio-Visual

My initial idea was to just create a composition however, this idea has developed further, and I will create an audio-visual work incorporating cinematography as well as composition. This is because editing video is a hobby of mine therefore showcasing this skill in a portfolio would promote future work in this field of the arts.

Design Process

I am storyboarding some initial scene ideas along with how the sound will be designed. I find graphic scores helpful in visualising my ideas as well as archiving them. When I next have access to the soma microphone I can begin creating the sound design for this scene.

Production Process

Video Recording Techniques:

Equipment: Panasonic HC-X1500 4K Camcorder

I am experimenting with microphones and camcorders beginning the creative practical process of this project. This initial experimentation was a great start in developing recording technique ideas and building new ones. For example, I found the use of blur a stylistic choice of cinematography. An unorthodox approach to recording visuals, however, is impactful for the narrative and feeling I am creating. What I learned from reviewing this footage is I want to remove all camera shake. I will experiment with gimbals and tripods to solve this issue.

I made this short montage by importing my video in Premiere Pro using the razor tool to cut and the select tool to arrange and using transition effects for flow. These are very basic tools I taught myself with quick Google searches.

Audio Recording Techniques: Field Recording

Equipment: H5 Kit and Telling Parabolic Dish and Condenser Microphone

Parabolic Dish captures an audio I would describe as Panasonic audio therefore matching the visuals. I field recorded for a total of 14 minutes which I learned from this activity was too short. Next time I will record longer durations and at different times of the day and separate days.

I am improving on the foundation editing techniques on ProTools such as fades, arrangement, cuts and basic EQ changes.

Conclusion

I planned originally for this work to be an audio-visual piece, however, the skill of cinematography I have no practice in. My initial experimentation gave me the realisation that unfortunately I could not pursue creating the cinematography on my own. That is not to say that I did not enjoy this practice it’s definitely something I would like to explore in the future. This experimentation led me to the conclusion that this will be only an audio soundscape and not an audio-visual work.
